Advancement and Pay Raises Available for Flight Attendants

The flight attendant profession is very different in the way they advance the employees and the way the airlines give their employees raises. There is opportunity for advancement from flight attendant jobs to a different type of job in the airline industry. First of all, the attendant could graduate to the level of a lead flight attendant and the next step might be to a supervisor. Then they could try for the position of base manager and then vice president of in-flight products. These advancements are sometimes based on the number of years they work for the airlines and others could be just a natural progression of the job. Another change they could make could be to aspire for the job of public relation specialists. Some of these advancements may take additional training, sometimes within the airline. These might be called promotions or they might just be a change in the work environment, from an airplane atmosphere to an office job when the attendant grew tired of traveling all the time and desired to have a more stable type of job.

Office workers and people working in banks and other types of office jobs have the opportunity to negotiate their salary raises and the majority is based upon the employee's performance. The flight attendant salary is based mostly on seniority and they are usually paid an hourly union rate. The professionals salary is based on what their labor contract states and this amount can last usually from three to five years until the contract expires. Each individual airline pay their employees on different pay scales and the attendants are usually grouped in a certain number of years worked and then paid according to the contract.

For instance, a certain airlines, per the union contract, could start their pay at twenty two dollars per hour, and pay their sixth year attendants thirty five dollars per hour, and lastly their fourteen year attendants an hour's wage of forty five dollars an hour. According to the contract, other airlines may also pay attendants on the number of flight miles accrued each month. The new employee should try and find airlines that have flight attendant salaries that are the norm in the business. It is also suggested that they choose an airline that is hiring on a regular basis and has the most flight attendant job openings as this will mean the attendant will be able to gain seniority faster which means a higher salary. If an attendant is looking to make the most money, it is recommended that they try to find employment with large airlines.
